For my hands on activity, I chose to prove that the volume of a cone is 1/3 the volume of a cylinder as well as discovering the volume of a sphere. For this activity, I used two different sized party hats, a tennis ball cut in half, and a paw patrol bottle to portray these volumes with the help of beans. It was crucial to find objects with the same radii/height in order for this experiment to be accurate. This activity is engaging and includes both inquiry as well as cooperative learning approaches.
I really enjoyed this project and truly want to incorporate it into my own classroom. The reason why I chose an 8th grade math topic is because I really wanted to focus on something that I can apply to my future classroom. It was fun to come up with these ideas and present them to the class! If I were to do this again with my class, I would have multiple sets of these objects so students can work with their peers more!
